Throughout my career, I’ve worked with many talented data professionals—data analysts and data scientists. One thing I’ve consistently noticed is that while they excel in technical skills like SQL, Python, and data visualization, there’s often a key gap.
⚡ The challenge arises when they are tasked with working directly with business stakeholders, without a manager or lead translating business needs into technical tasks. This is where things can go wrong.
» » » The most important skill to develop? The ability to collect the entire business context. It’s about understanding the problem from all angles, having a clear picture of all business units involved, and most importantly, not treating data columns as abstract "A, B, C" but recognizing them for what they truly represent—revenue, sales, product type, etc.
This holistic understanding is what bridges the gap between data work and real business impact. And it’s crucial for career growth. If you’re only focused on writing queries or analyzing distributions, you might hit an upper limit in your career.
😌 But once you learn to understand the why behind the data and communicate that effectively, that’s when you unlock the next level in your professional journey.
